Report: Giant Gundam Statue In Japan To Be Torn Down, Possibly Replaced

Viewing the “Mobile Suit Gundam” statue in Tokyo is on most Gundam fans’ bucket lists. But the opportunity to view the real-size scale replica of the iconic anime robot will come to an end next year.

The interactive statue is an homage to “RX-78-2,” a fictional manned robot from the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series that debuted in 1979. The statue was originally constructed in 2009 — shifting locations before ultimately settling in Seaside Park on Tokyo’s Odaiba island — but will be disassembled next March, according to Kotaku.

There is hope for Gundam diehards. Plans for a new giant Gundam are in the works, though details have yet to be revealed, according to a report cited by Kotaku.

Considering 2019 is Gundam’s 40th anniversary, let’s hope there’s an even better robot — or fleet of them — on the horizon.
