Roborace’s Prototype Makes Public Debut Without Driver Inside Cockpit

It might be a few years before we start seeing fully driverless cars on public roads. But self-driving race cars are much closer to becoming reality.

Roborace, the first racing series for autonomous vehicles, is expected to launch during the second half of Season 3 of Formula E. And, ahead of FE’s Marrakesh ePrix, it took a major step towards realizing that goal.

Roborace’s prototype DevBot completed 12 laps — an out lap, 10 flying laps and an in lap — around the Moulay El Hassan street circuit in Morocco without a driver inside the cockpit. DevBot’s first successful driverless running comes less than one year after the concept of Roborace was first announced.

What we find interesting, is Roborace’s engineers programmed DevBot to build up speed with each lap as it learns the circuit — much like a human would do.

Henry Ford once said, “auto racing began five minutes after the second car was built.” We’re just waiting on that second car from Roborace.
